The connect is fruad schemes. Ponzi scheme is named after Charles Ponzi,who became notorious for using the technique in early 1920. Ponzi did not invent the scheme though. Charles Dickens' 1857 novel Little Dorrit described such a scheme decades before Ponzi was born but his fraud scheme took out so much money from the people that the scheme became popular as Ponzi scheme. Pyramid scheme is also a fraud scheme similar to Ponzi scheme.
